Founded in 1976 by Roberto Ballini, a professional cyclist in the '70s,
this agricultural business is located at Cavo on the island of Elba.
Located on the main road of Parata at the foot of Monte Grosso, the Apiculture
is enveloped in the green of the Tuscan Archipelago's National Park.
The land made fertile by the Mediterranean climate was coltivated until
the 1950's before being abbandoned until the arrival of the Ballini family.
Eventually, with much love and patience, the land was transformed through
the revival of antique cultivation techniques which are considered out
dated today but none the less resulted in the growth of fig, pear and
apple orchids.
Today the company which is now managed by sons Francesco and Alessandro
extends to a total of 30,000 square meters almost entirely comprised
of certified AIAB biological cultures destined for plantations of typical
local fruit. The company also produces a fine quality honey with families
of bees dispersed over 22 different locations; from Volterraio to Capoliveri,
from Cavo to Marciana.
The bees collect various types of pollen from a multitude of plant varieties
growing in uncontaminated zones. The honey that these bees go on to produce
is therefore of extraordinary taste and flavor; from the typical mediterranean
bush flowers to rosemary of which 14 types are known. other flavors include
Thistle, Chestnuts, Eucalyptus and Heather to the more unusual Arbutus,
Lavender and the much discussed "elicriso" honey.
The Ballini company also specializes in the reproduction of the Queen
bee, species of which are sold through out Europe and around the world.
The agriculture business Ballini is open for tours of an educational
nature.
